The phrase “world model” is used broadly, so useful discussion starts with a boundary. A world model is concerned with how an environment changes through time and interaction. The useful definition

A world model predicts a world, not only a picture of one.

Image and video generators can produce a convincing view. An interactive world also has to respond when the viewpoint moves or the user acts. Objects need some continuity, the environment needs plausible change, and the next state needs to relate to what just happened.

Research systems approach that challenge in different ways. Some generate an environment from a prompt, some learn dynamics from video or action data, and some ground the experience in representations of real places. “AI world model” names the direction, not one standard architecture or finished game engine.

Google’s Project Genie makes the research direction visible.

Google described Project Genie as an experimental prototype for creating and exploring interactive environments with a general-purpose world model. In its May 19, 2026 update, Google said the experience added richer controls, more dynamic worlds, and grounding in real places through Google Maps Platform imagery, including Street View.

Google also said Project Genie was rolling out to eligible Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States. The important qualifier is “experimental prototype”: it demonstrates a research trajectory, not a universal replacement for designed game systems, authored rules, or production game engines.

For game creators, fast interactive prototypes could make it easier to test an atmosphere, movement idea, or level premise before every asset and rule is final. For researchers, games offer a demanding test of consistency because players immediately probe boundaries and attempt unexpected actions.

Production games add requirements that a striking demo may not solve: repeatability, authored pacing, safety, performance, accessibility, persistence, and a clear relationship between player skill and outcome. The path from generated environment to durable game is therefore a design problem as much as a model problem.

What is an AI world model?

Is a world model the same as a game engine?
